Pharmacogenomic
(GeneSight®) Testing

What is Pharmacogenomics?

Pharmacogenomics analyzes how your unique genetic profile influences your body’s response to medications. This testing helps clinicians evaluate dosing needs and anticipate potential side effects or drug-gene interactions. While it cannot guarantee which medication will be effective, it provides supportive data to help guide clinical decisions.

Understanding What GeneSight® Can and Cannot Do

Genetic testing offers valuable data to help guide clinical decisions, but understanding its clinical scope is essential.

The test analyzes how your body metabolizes specific psychiatric medications, helping identify potential side-effect sensitivities and gene-drug interactions. It classifies medications into structured categories based on expected metabolic and receptor interactions, which helps tailor medication choices and dosing strategies more precisely.

At the same time, pharmacogenomic testing has clear clinical boundaries. It cannot diagnose mental health disorders, nor can it guarantee that a specific medication will resolve your symptoms. Most importantly, genetic data does not replace a comprehensive clinical evaluation, which must always consider medical history, past treatment responses, drug-drug interactions, and everyday lifestyle factors.

Who is This Test For?

GeneSight® testing is not routinely required for every individual. This test is evaluated on a case-by-case basis for established patients who:

  • Have tried one or more standard psychiatric medications without adequate symptom improvement.

  • Experience significant or unexpected side effects from typical therapeutic doses.

  • Require clarity on complex drug-gene interactions during medication adjustments.

How the Testing Process Works

  1. Clinical Consultation: During an established medication management visit, we evaluate whether pharmacogenomic data will provide meaningful clinical insight for your care.

  2. Sample Collection: A  cheek swab is completed in office or mailed directly to your home.

  3. Laboratory Analysis: The sample is processed directly by Myriad Neuroscience (GeneSight®).

  4. Follow-Up Review: Once results arrive (typically 3–5 business days), we schedule a follow-up appointment to review your report together and determine what adjustments, if any, are clinically appropriate.

Cost & Payment Transparency

Our practice is an independent, direct-pay clinic. Because GeneSight® is an external laboratory test processed by Myriad Genetics, lab billing is handled entirely separately from our clinical consultation fees.

1. Laboratory Testing Fees (Billed by Myriad Genetics)

  • Direct Billing: Our clinic does not sell, mark up, or charge for the GeneSight® collection kit. Myriad Genetics bills you or your insurance directly.

  • Using Third-Party Insurance for Lab Processing: Even though our practice does not bill insurance, you may still provide commercial insurance details on the lab requisition form. Myriad will bill your health plan directly for the laboratory analysis.

  • The "GeneSight Promise" & Out-of-Pocket Limits: https://genesight.com/cost/insurance/

    • If your estimated insurance out-of-pocket cost exceeds $330, Myriad contacts you prior to processing the test to discuss payment options or allow you to cancel at zero charge.

    • For patients choosing not to use insurance or who are uninsured, Myriad offers a standard self-pay rate of $330, along with sliding-scale financial assistance and interest-free payment plans based on household income.

2. Clinical Consultation & Evaluation Fees

  • There are no additional fees from Healing Halls. Standard appointment rates apply for the clinical visits required to evaluate medical appropriateness, coordinate sample collection, and conduct the follow-up interpretation.
